March 2022: LSC Volunteers Serve Flood Survivors in Waverly, TN
Pastor Ed Grant (Calvary Lutheran, Charleston, SC) assembled a team of volunteers from SC, NC, VA, and MD to support residential rebuilds in the aftermath of a very destructive flood in Waverly, TN. On August 21, 2021 over 21 inches of rain fell, causing the creek running through town to overflow its banks. Over 300 families in the town of 4,000 people had to leave their homes to escape the waters, only to return to homes completely washed away or so severely damaged that they could not be reoccupied without major restorations. The LSC team worked on three homes over the course of the week. One home needed new flooring, one home needed complete rewiring, and one home needed wallboard and mudding. One family from Charleston brought their teenage children who through the course of the week gained many valuable skills associated with serving others.
